The Schwitzer brand has an impressive history dating back to 1918, when it was founded by Louis Schwitzer in Indianapolis, United States. Louis Schwitzer was not only an ingenious constructor, but also the winner of the very first race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909. His passion for speed and engineering laid the foundation for a brand that grew into a fixture in the world of turbo technology.
Initially Schwitzer produced shock absorbers and parts for cooling systems, but as early as the 1920s the first supercharger was developed. This was followed in 1952 by the first turbocharger for use in a Cummins diesel racing car, and from 1954 Schwitzer supplied turbochargers for Caterpillar engines. The brand soon became known for its reliable and efficient turbochargers, which made their mark in both heavy commercial vehicles and performance cars.
In the decades that followed, Schwitzer worked with other big names in the turbo industry, including KKK and Holset. This collaboration led to the integration of Schwitzer into BorgWarner Turbo Systems in 1999. This combined Schwitzer's technical expertise with BorgWarner's global clout, resulting in a wide range of innovative turbochargers for a variety of applications.
Schwitzer turbochargers were and are used in a variety of engines - from industrial diesel engines to sporty gasoline powerplants. The brand was known for its strong focus on durability, precision and balance, characteristics that can still be found today in the BorgWarner product line. Innovations such as variable turbine geometry and two-stage systems have given Schwitzer a lasting place in the history of turbocharging.
