BorgWarner is a leading global manufacturer of turbochargers, known for its combination of innovation, quality and versatility. A key part of this success story is KKK - in full Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch - which was founded in 1899 in Frankenthal, Germany. What began as a German manufacturer of mechanical components grew into one of the most influential names in turbo technology.
In the 1950s, KKK developed the first turbochargers for heavy-duty applications. Reliability and performance endeared the brand to major engine manufacturers such as MAN, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. From compact turbo applications of 20 kW to industrial systems of 1,000 kW - KKK was known for its wide applicability and technical soundness.
In 1997, American BorgWarner took a majority stake in KKK. Shortly thereafter, Schwitzer and KKK were also merged into BorgWarner Turbo Systems. This created a unique combination of German precision and American development power, with production facilities in Germany, the U.S. and Hungary, among others. In 2003, the company was officially named BorgWarner Turbo Systems GmbH.
Today, BorgWarner produces KKK turbochargers for a wide range of applications: from passenger cars and light commercial vehicles to heavy trucks, industrial engines, ship drives and locomotives. Thanks to close cooperation with car manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Audi, Volvo, Scania, Renault and Peugeot, KKK turbochargers are often matched to the engine as early as the design stage, ensuring an optimal balance between performance, durability and efficiency.
BorgWarner also continues to innovate. For example, the company developed the R2S® (Regulated 2-Stage Turbocharging) system for more powerful response at all engine speeds, and the eBooster® - an electrically driven compressor that increases turbo pressure at low revs. In addition, BorgWarner introduced variable turbine geometry and titanium compressor wheels, further pushing the boundaries of turbocharging technology.
