How does a turbo work?<\/h3>\n

A turbocharger uses the energy from exhaust gases that is normally lost. These gases drive the turbine wheel, which spins the compressor wheel via a shaft. The compressor wheel draws in air through the air filter, compresses it and sends the compressed air to the engine.<\/p>\n

This extra air allows the engine to burn more fuel, resulting in extra power as well as a more fuel-efficient combustion process. Unlike a supercharger - which is driven directly from the engine and therefore has a quick response but is less efficient - a turbocharger harnesses the energy of the exhaust gases. Modern turbo technology has minimized so-called \u2018turbo lag,\u2019 so the response is almost as direct as a supercharger, but with higher efficiency and often lower fuel consumption.<\/p>\n

      History of the turbocharger<\/h3>\n

      The quest to improve engine performance and reduce fuel consumption began as early as the late 19th century. In 1885 and 1886, pioneers such as Gottlieb Daimler and Rudolf Diesel explored ways to make engines more efficient by introducing compressed air. But it was Alfred J. B\u00fcchil of Switzerland who developed and established the turbocharger in 1905.<\/p>\n

      In 1938, Swiss Machine Works Sauer produced the first turbo engine for trucks, and in 1961 Scania introduced the first standard built-in turbo engine.<\/p>\n

      The 1970s marked a breakthrough for the turbo, especially in motorsports. Formula 1 brought the term \u2019turbo\u2019 into the limelight, which led car manufacturers to offer turbochargers in their models. In 1978, the Mercedes-Benz 300 TD and the VW Golf Turbo Diesel were presented, both of which offered the turbo engine as a standard option.<\/p>\n

      Today, turbochargers are standard in almost all truck engines, especially after emissions requirements became stricter in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n
